Thank you for your reply. The A drive just slides into the side of the laptop. On the back it says it is a Dell 'floppy drive module'. It cannot be plugged into a USB port. I have tried running the new hardware wizard and it does not recognize any new device. The CD ROM drive that slides into the same spot when I take out the A drive works fine. The computer is a laptop that I had at my prior job and the A drive worked when I was there (left in January).

However, before they gave me the laptop they wiped the hard drive clean, then reinstalled Windows 2000 and a few other programs. Now, it does not recognize the A drive.

I took the A drive back to them because I thought it was a bad drive. Their IT person said the drive works and I needed to download a driver. Any other suggestions? Thanks again!

Is it possible you have the wrong floppy? Or perhaps they didn't really test it at the office? I'm sitting here looking at the floppy for my D600 and it says 'Floppy Drive Module' Model MPF82E. On the back it has the standard modular port connector and on the side (left, rear) it has a tiny USB port (small one that resembles IEEE1394 port). The USB port is used in conjunction with a short cable to plug into a standard USB port.

This is required anytime you need to have the CDROM and floppy installed at the same time. I also have a brand new D610 which did not come with a floppy.

So just now, as a test, I dug out my new D610 and hot-plugged in the floppy from my D600. It instantly popped up and said 'New hardware found. Sony floppy.'

It was ready to go. Prior to just now the new D610 had only ever had the CD/DVD burner plugged in. Check the left, rear of your floppy and see if it has the tiny USB connector on the corner. If it does not you may have the wrong floppy (obviously I'm just guessing at this point).:smileyhappy. Thank you so much!

I found the little USB port on the side of the floppy drive, which I had not noticed before, and plugged a USB cable into that port and the side of the laptop. Then I rebooted and the 'Found New Hardware' wizard came up. I ran through the wizard and behold! - the floppy drive worked! It still doesn't work in the slide-in-slot on the side of the laptop, but now I can use both the CD ROM/DVD drive and the floppy drive at the same time as you said. Really appreciate your kindness!!
