Colt Sp1 Serial Numbers

A friend of mine has an older model Colt AR15. It has some wear on the exterior (not much) but the BCG shows hardly any wear. The serial number is in the early SP12300's which puts this at an older model and from what I just read online makes the year of manufacture 1968 or 1969. What value should this weapon be given? Someone wanted to trade him a newer AR for it. I thought that the value of the newer AR would be much lower than one this old. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

A couple of pics. I took them with my phone. Obviously, the last two digits of the serial number are edited out. Thanks for the help. I would think the rifle is worth in the $1750 to $2250 range if indeed it has all SP-1 era parts correct to the serial number range on it, and since it is a very low serial number,( if it was on the first SP-1 carbines, it would worth up 3 to 5K), you may want to send a message to user 'Richard in LA', he loves the old Colt AR's, in fact he has shot some matches with us with some SP-1 rifles, great rifle, had one, sold mine to a Jeff Parish S.O.

Dy and he butchered it to make a patrol carbine out of it. Need some more information on some of the internal parts. Can you get a picture of the BCG?

Also, take the buffer out, you should know right away if it is an Edgewater buffer. What are the markings on the barrel in front of the FSB, and in between the legs of the FSB?

68-69 sounds about right. I think that Tactical723's prices are a bit on the high side. You can search gunbroker and see what they are asking for similar rifles, but for what they are currently selling for, you need to search the recently ended auctions. There was an SP1 on here the other day with very similar features, but a 'tad' earlier production for $1100, and another newer one for $800. If it was a NIB, with the original box and accessories as shipped from Colt, that is another story. Based my values on very current gunbroker sales, there are currently 3 in the hundred thousand serial numbers in the $1500 range, as you stated, would all depend if it is original early Colt BCG, charging handle, etc. This SP-1 would be gem, if original to a Colt SP-1 collectorits not an early charging handle, as I can see its not a triangle shape.

The hard part about telling if it is original, is that there is an SP1 database over on ARFcom that shows serial numbers above and below this one with 'duckbill' flash hiders, whereas this is a 3-prong. There is really no way of knowing for sure what it came from the factory with, unless it is NIB. I agree it is a nice specimen, but there appears to be some honest wear on the lower, in the front of the magwell, and also there appears to be some cracks on the right side handguard on the top, which is normal for the triangle handguards. Prices of the 'Retro' style AR's are starting to come down just like the rest of everything AR related now. I didn't see any bids over $1200 on SP1's over on gunbroker. Most of them keep getting relisted at the same insane prices. I see you posted over in the 'retro' forum, and the rules there prohibit them from discussing values, but some of those guys are ate up with the retro BRD, and will get into bidding wars over things as simple as a dimped takedown pin, and are prone to paying $600+ for original 601 green handguards or stock I've been looking for a nice, early rifle such as this, and I even have the early Colt carry handle scope already for one.

I'm still searching for a Coltguard nickel SP1, only one I find is the one on Gunbroker that the nickel is flaking off the magwell. I'll find one one day, and I'm buying the next one I find for sale. Early SP1 carbine pRon. Damn guys, my birthday is in March, would love to have the nickel plated SP-1 in my safe, just let me know if you accomodate me, LMAOLine starts behind me. If you are shopping, there are a good number of fakes out there, so be cautious.

Get the serial number and call colt for verification. Iirc, if the SN starts with 202, your good. There was a NIB, unfired one with 2 mags still in wrap, and the cardboard tube still in the barrel for $2500. Steve, I know, isn't that rude of me? I'll be sure to bring it to lunch one day so you can see it in person.
